Penguin Recruitment Geo-Sector Team

Every year Penguin’s Geo-Sector team places hundreds of professionals into new roles. Every day we discuss employment opportunities, career paths, relevant qualifications… with employers and Geo-Sector job seekers. All this goes towards making Penguin Recruitment the leading authority in Geo-Sector recruitment.

Our understanding of the sector is second to none and is based on real time data received through placement analysis and industry specific surveys.

We use this knowledge to shape our daily conversations and we share our research findings with the people that need it most: our wonderful clients and our amazing candidates.

Penguin are pleased to now present a series of articles that we believe will prove invaluable to jobseekers, beginning with some advice for those looking to enter the sector for the first time.

How to find your first role in the UK Geo-Sector

Finding your first role in the UK Geo-Sector can be hard, but it doesn’t have to be. Ensure you are ‘market ready’ when you graduate and make sure you possess all the tools necessary to secure your dream role.

One of our strengths is that we are amazingly good at placing Geo-Sector Graduates into their first role in Industry with the vast majority joining the Ground Investigation sector.

The courses studied by those we help include Geology (and all related courses), Environmental Science, Environmental Geoscience, Geoscience and Earth Science, Physical Geography & Geography and many variations of all.

If you are studying one of these courses and are interested in a career within the Ground Investigation Sector, then read on to find out the single biggest mistake you could make before you even apply for a role!

On a recent survey of over 2000 professionals working within the Geo-Sector, 17.5% of the respondents told us that they left university without a driving licence, with 75% of these believing that it held them back in securing their first role.

We recognise that there are roles within the industry that do not require a driving licence to complete the tasks, but these are usually desk bound jobs, where analysis of data was first and foremost and did not include interesting site work – where you are able to actually see and understand what is happening.

The Geo-Sector requires plenty of site visits and not all will be near public transport. If you don’t yet drive and are perhaps struggling to fund the process, ask your parents and relatives, or even your bank manager now about the best way to secure your Driving Licence before you start your search for work.

Currently there is a 3 to 4 month wait at most driving test centres. With a pass rate of approx. 48.4% (ever changing), you need to act now to ensure that by the time you are ready to work, you have the necessary skills.
