Penguin Recruitment Geo-Sector Team

Every year Penguin’s Geo-Sector team places hundreds of professionals into new roles. Every day we discuss employment opportunities, career paths, relevant qualifications… with employers and Geo-Sector job seekers. All this goes towards making Penguin Recruitment the leading authority in Geo-Sector recruitment.

Our understanding of the sector is second to none and is based on real time data received through placement analysis and industry specific surveys.

We use this knowledge to shape our daily conversations and we share our research findings with the people that need it most: our wonderful clients and our amazing candidates.

Penguin are pleased to now present a series of articles that we believe will prove invaluable to jobseekers, beginning with some advice for those looking to enter the sector for the first time.

How to find your first role in the UK Geo-Sector

Finding your first role in the UK Geo-Sector can be hard, but it doesn’t have to be. Ensure you are ‘market ready’ when you graduate and make sure you possess all the tools necessary to secure your dream role.

Your most likely mid-career goal will be to work towards Chartered or Professional status within your given profession. This not only enhances your skills and knowledge but also certainly gives you the potential to earn a higher salary.

You should consider which professional institution you want to join to support your professional development both during and after university. There is no doubt that this will assist you as you work towards Chartership. Joining the right organisation will expose you to relevant industry/workplace technical subject matter outside of your study (by attending evening meetings for example which are usually free to attend) and also provide you with valuable networking opportunities.

As an example, The Geological Society hold regular webinars and face to face meetings, many of which are free to attend both nationally and regionally, and often run sessions specifically targeting early careers professionals which can be very relevant to students. Their meetings and other useful information can be found here:

Most institutions offer low-cost student memberships and many employers will then pay your annual membership/subscription to relevant institutions once hired.

Our Geo Candidate survey showed that 10.6% of survey respondents were Chartered and that 60% of those achieved that status in 5 to 7 years.

Insight: We often see a bonus of £2,000 to £4,000 and/or a salary boost of approximately £2,000 to 4,000 upon gaining Chartership
