How to find your first role in the UK Geo-Sector
Finding your first role in the UK Geo-Sector can be hard, but it doesn’t have to be. Ensure you are ‘market ready’ when you graduate and make sure you possess all the tools necessary to secure your dream role.
Following COVID-19, hybrid working, remote working or some component of working from home (WFH) has become common across the UK. Many university students also had to pivot and study online.
In pre covid 2019, only 4.7% of UK workers worked from home. As of now, 44% of UK workers work from home at least some of the time.
The benefits of working from home can be significant, but as a graduate working in a predominantly site-focussed industry, do not expect WFH to be extended as an option until you are thoroughly trained in the office-based components of your role. These include report writing of both Factual and Interpretative reports.
Most companies have sensible policies and will try to fit in with your plans, but many Early Career roles are 80%+ site based where working from home is not possible.
This probably works in your favour. As a graduate starting your career, it is so important to be around people you can learn from, who can train and develop you. Learning is so much more efficient and effective when you are in the same room as colleagues.
As your career develops, WFH options will become much more available.
