How to Handle the Job Search Curve Balls

Geo-Sector Graduates and Undergraduates

Penguin Recruitment Geo-Sector Team

Every year Penguin’s Geo-Sector team places hundreds of professionals into new roles. Every day we discuss employment opportunities, career paths, relevant qualifications… with employers and Geo-Sector job seekers. All this goes towards making Penguin Recruitment the leading authority in Geo-Sector recruitment.

Our understanding of the sector is second to none and is based on real time data received through placement analysis and industry specific surveys.

We use this knowledge to shape our daily conversations and we share our research findings with the people that need it most: our wonderful clients and our amazing candidates.

Penguin are pleased to now present a series of articles that we believe will prove invaluable to jobseekers, beginning with some advice for those looking to enter the sector for the first time.

How to find your first role in the UK Geo-Sector

Finding your first role in the UK Geo-Sector can be hard, but it doesn’t have to be. Ensure you are ‘market ready’ when you graduate and make sure you possess all the tools necessary to secure your dream role.

I didn’t secure the University grade I wanted

There are many types of employers, and they will look for different levels of academic success. So, a lower grade than expected may not be as harmful to your career as you fear. It may limit the type of organisation you can join as a recent graduate, but after 12 to 18 months, you are likely to be on a similar trajectory as other career routes.

As a general rule, Consultants prefer a higher grade, whereas Contractors place emphasis on personal qualities, such as the ability of the graduate to turn up each day on site and supervise activities – possibly requiring less academic achievement.

I have not secured any offers

The overwhelming advice from our survey responders was – do not give up.

Only 61% of our survey responders in the geo-sector landed a job in the sector straight after graduating, with 29% working in a different sector initially. With the other 10% taking time out.

You may not find a role straight away, so if you’re having no luck in the geo-sector just try to find any job for now. Many geo-graduates we know began their career path by working in retail, hospitality or general office work. We find that our clients are happy to arrange interviews that fit around their schedule. It tends to be much easier to land a job when you already have one. Keep yourself busy while you wait for the market to be right for you.
