How do you find that first role in the Geo-Sector?

Geo-Sector Graduates and Undergraduates

Penguin Recruitment Geo-Sector Team

Every year Penguin’s Geo-Sector team places hundreds of professionals into new roles. Every day we discuss employment opportunities, career paths, relevant qualifications… with employers and Geo-Sector job seekers. All this goes towards making Penguin Recruitment the leading authority in Geo-Sector recruitment.

Our understanding of the sector is second to none and is based on real time data received through placement analysis and industry specific surveys.

We use this knowledge to shape our daily conversations and we share our research findings with the people that need it most: our wonderful clients and our amazing candidates.

Penguin are pleased to now present a series of articles that we believe will prove invaluable to jobseekers, beginning with some advice for those looking to enter the sector for the first time.

How to find your first role in the UK Geo-Sector

Finding your first role in the UK Geo-Sector can be hard, but it doesn’t have to be. Ensure you are ‘market ready’ when you graduate and make sure you possess all the tools necessary to secure your dream role.

As part of Penguin’s Geo-Candidate Survey, we asked this very question to our database of geo-professionals:

Employers utilise one or several of the available options to promote roles within their organisation. Generally speaking you should monitor as many online job boards as you can, try to network within the profession and sign up with a specialist Geo Sector recruitment company.

Talk to the Geo-Sector Recruitment Experts – Penguin Recruitment

Although this advisory series of articles is not intended in any way as a sales pitch, naturally we recommend that you make contact with us here at Penguin. We focus solely on the Geo-Sector and we have been in business since 2004. As a result, you can be assured that our team have the requisite knowledge, expertise and (importantly) client contacts to help you land that first role.

We place hundreds of geo-graduates into their first roles and we’re proud of the excellent feedback we receive from employers and job hunters alike.

As regards other routes to finding your first role, The University Careers Fair is slowly becoming overtaken by online methods. Potential employers congregate in a single venue and typically a number of large organisations (with large marketing budgets) present themselves as the most favourable employer. Careers Fairs are still prevalent but mostly the process has moved online. Some specialist local career fairs can be awesome, meeting people face 2 face and building relationships.

Larger employers generally start their recruitment process in January for a September cohort in any given year.

Small to Medium sized Enterprises tend to have a faster recruitment process, feedback is immediate and start dates are flexible, meaning that you can apply when you are ready, perhaps when you return from travel. Due to the very nature of these processes, it is best to apply to online job adverts 4 to 6 weeks before you are wanting to start. You can target the location you desire and find local companies that will give you great training.

It can be hard to find the right company and know the correct people to approach. It is also hard to find the hidden gems within the industry that ensure that new recruits receive the very best training available.

Which again is why we recommend using a specialist Geo-Sector Recruiter

You may quickly find that identifying suitable companies to approach is a lot harder than you think, but don’t worry – help is at hand! Penguin Recruitment can do all of the leg work for you. Rather than trawl through a range of online job boards, a quick email or call to Penguin to build a relationship, can secure your future.

Penguin can provide expert CV guidance, carry out mock Interviews and prepare you with interview techniques that will set you above other candidates. People who say that it is impossible to prepare for interviews have not studied the science – we have (and it helps that we know the employers well).

Downloading the booklet below is a fine first step, and we can help you navigate the rest.
