Geo-Sector Graduates and Undergraduates

Penguin Recruitment Geo-Sector Team

Every year Penguin’s Geo-Sector team places hundreds of professionals into new roles. Every day we discuss employment opportunities, career paths, relevant qualifications… with employers and Geo-Sector job seekers. All this goes towards making Penguin Recruitment the leading authority in Geo-Sector recruitment.

Our understanding of the sector is second to none and is based on real time data received through placement analysis and industry specific surveys.

We use this knowledge to shape our daily conversations and we share our research findings with the people that need it most: our wonderful clients and our amazing candidates.

Penguin are pleased to now present a series of articles that we believe will prove invaluable to jobseekers, beginning with some advice for those looking to enter the sector for the first time.

How to find your first role in the UK Geo-Sector

Finding your first role in the UK Geo-Sector can be hard, but it doesn’t have to be. Ensure you are ‘market ready’ when you graduate and make sure you possess all the tools necessary to secure your dream role.

Social media may have a larger impact on hiring decisions than you think, with 54% of our hiring managers cross referencing to online profiles. Although this could be considered a step too far by some, it’s best that we are upfront and honest about our survey findings.

Of those hiring managers that do research an applicant’s social media presence, 52% confirmed that what they find could affect their hiring decision, with 21% suggesting that the information can have a positive effect on their decision.

Of our hiring manager survey respondents, 71% used LinkedIn, 35% used Facebook and 18% used Instagram to view applicants’ profiles.

Only 1.5% of our hiring managers suggested that not having an on-line presence could negatively impact their hiring decision.

The feedback is clear. If you have an online presence, keep it professional. Remember that you are not always in control of comments on your social media accounts, especially Facebook. If some of your friends can be controversial, it is probably best to keep access private.

A Linkedin profile is considered as the most important by our employer clients, which is of course not surprising when it comes to career/employment assessment. Indeed, 97.2% of our survey responders maintain their own LinkedIn profile.

Ensure your LinkedIn profile accurately matches your CV in terms of dates and activity as occasionally they will be cross referenced.
