A leading multidisciplinary consultancy, who specialise in masterplanning, urban design, landscape, environmental assessment, ecology, architecture, arboriculture, and green infrastructure, are looking for an Ornithologist to join their team in Derby.

Ornithologist Responsibilities

In this role, you will work alongside this consultancy’s team of Ecologists, Landscape Architects and Design Planners, whilst carrying out the following duties:

  • Leading and conducting ornithological surveys.
  • Analysing data, presenting results, conducting desk-based research, gathering relevant data, and preparing technical reports.
  • Experience with Ecological Impact Assessments for sensitive species, sites, or populations, and completing Shadow Habitats Regulations Assessments is highly desirable.
  • Supporting additional ecological surveys that align with your skills and career goals, including those related to water voles, otters, badgers, bats, habitats, etc.
  • Providing ecological and ornithological guidance to clients, stakeholders, and project teams.
  • Mentoring and supporting colleagues interested in ornithology, sharing expertise to promote their professional development.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies.

Ornithologist Requirements

  • A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong bird identification and ornithological surveying skills and techniques.
  • Willingness to travel for work.
  • Knowledge of UK wildlife legislation and the conservation status of UK bird species.
  • Proven experience in report writing with attention to detail and high standards.
  • Understanding of scientific data collection methods, data analysis, and proficiency in accurate and clear data recording and storage.
  • CIEEM membership is desirable.
  • Experience with GIS software is an advantage.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
